Here is a bit of advice that might seem like a no brainer, but its especially true today.
Keep up to date on everything you can in whatever industry or vertical you are in.  Read each and every day trade articles, opinions and thoughts from leaders and those in the trenches (and those building the trenches).  Know what is going on on Wall Street, Washington DC, Silicon Valley and Hollywood.

Know what your corporate bosses are saying and your competition’s corporate bosses too.  Share what you read with others around you (above, below and everywhere in between) and find out what they are reading as well.Another bit of advice along those lines would be to have in an upcoming staff meeting or gathering:  have someone or a small group of people bring in an interesting article or writing to discuss with the rest of the department.  Get everyone's opinion and thoughts on the subject matter.  Have staff members share trade websites they frequent with each other.

The day-to-day grind is tough.

But if you invest 20-30 minutes a day just reading and soaking in what is going on out there...even on a weekend too…it will make a world of difference in your job performance, your department/division/company and career.

A well-rounded, educated, career-minded individual and department is worth their weight in gold.“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” -- Dr. Seuss
